Our main service is high-throughput high quality daycase Cataract Surgery.

Our Cataract Surgery Service has the following benefits:

  • State-of-the-art Daycase surgery in an established Cataract Treatment Centre

We use the latest small incision phakoemulsification cataract extraction techniques and can cope with all manner of unusual and complex cases. We won't "cherry-pick". We have an established record of provision of care to the local population

  • Proven high-quality surgery with exceptional outcomes

We are extremely proud of our surgical results. Our outcomes are amongst the best in the country, and have been presented to an audience of peers at a National Cataract meeting

  • Continuous Computerised Clinical Audit allowing transparent outcome sharing and comparison against established benchmarks

We use a computerised Cataract Electronic Patient Record designed specifically for Cataract audit. We can provide up to the minute outcome measures with an unprecedented amount of detail if required. We firmly believe that outcomes should be available to both purchasers of care and patients, hence the results section of this website.

  • Local established NHS surgeons providing 24 hour cover - no "travelling" surgeons

A recent paper from the Kings Fund warned that although the Patient Choice initiative will encourage the provision of more care, it would not necessarily lead to better or more effective care. "In fact, greater choice may lead to reduced quality". We are a body of established NHS Consultants, who as such are subjected to annual appraisal and revalidation. We have and maintain rigorous and transparent outcome measures. We provide 24 hour cover for the patient - no "telephone helplines" or travelling surgeons. As we are all based at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, and provide a 24 hour Consultant on-call cover for the NHS, any patient operated on under the care of BEC (or any other patient for that matter) can be seen anytime of the day or night.
